SATI is a professional association for language practice professionals in South Africa. Membership is open to all translators, interpreters, editors, proofreaders, text reviewers, terminologists, copywriters and anyone else involved in the language practice industry. SATI is not an employment agency.
In our multilingual society, a professional interpreter or translator is a must. SATI accredits interpreters and translators, as well as language editors and terminologists.
The institute has around 700 members working in 30 or more languages, including the major African and European languages and others like Russian, Arabic, Mandarin and Cantonese. Members include agencies that provide an even wider range. Members offer a variety of services, among them conference interpreting and document translation.
SATI is a national non-profit organisation. It was founded in 1956 with the aim of giving the translator professional status and pride, and offering protection to both language practitioners and clients. Although voluntary, its accreditation system is tightly controlled and widely recognised; accredited members can be expected to provide work of high quality. SATI members subscribe to a code of ethics that protects all parties involved. Members have assisted at numerous major international events and conferences. SATI has been a member of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) since 1993 and has served on its council since 1996. A SATI member is the current president of FIT, reflecting SATI’s international standing.
